WebAIM Community

WebAIM's top goal is to help make the web more accessible to individuals with disabilities. We can't do that on our own. Since 1999, we have helped build a large community of developers, web masters, individuals with disabilities, and others who share this goal with us. In the sharing of resources and information, the web accessibility community benefits. WebAIM provides several ways for you to both learn and share with others.

E-mail Discussion List

With over 1000 subscribers, the WebAIM list is one of the largest accessibility discussion lists available. The list was started over 6 years ago and the list archives contain a wealth of information. With subscribers who range from the foremost accessibility experts to those just beginning in web accessibility, the list is an excellent resource for anyone.
You can subscribe with the options to get individual e-mail messages as they are posted by subscribers or you can receive your messages in a digest format that will be sent to you once a day.

0 Accessible Web Site Certification

Accessible Web Site Certification

Our accessible web site certification service can help you ensure that you are meeting and will continue to meet accessibility guidelines and requirements.

What is Site Certification?

WebAIM will provide a statement declaring the level of accessibility of your web site on a specific date. Certification is really nothing more than an extension of our Site Monitoring and Reporting and Consulting services.
There are four steps to site certification:
  1. WebAIM will conduct a comprehensive review of your site.
  2. Based on your preference, we will either report on or repair all accessibility and compliance barriers on the site.
  3. Once our strict accessibility requirements are met, we can certify the accessibility of your site to a pre-determined standard.
  4. If you'd like, we can then monitor and re-certify your site to ensure accessibility over time.

How Much Does Certification Cost?

NOTHING!
That's right, certification itself is offered at no cost. However, in order to provide the certification, WebAIM must conduct an evaluation of the site and all compliance issues identified must be resolved. The cost of our evaluation and reporting or evaluation and repair services is based upon the depth, breadth, and current accessibility of your web site, but is very reasonable. We'd be happy to discuss specifics or provide you with a quote.

Why Would I Want Certification?

There are several reasons why you might want WebAIM to certify the accessibility of your site:
  • You may have a received funding from the federal government that requires that your materials adhere to Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act or some other accessibility guideline or law. WebAIM can verify that you have met these technical requirements.
  • You may be creating a service or application that you would like to market to the federal government. If you can verify that your product conforms with Section 508, you will have an advantage over other similar products and services that do not meet this standard.
  • You want to confidently proclaim that your site has an accessible web presence and has been certified by a recognized leader in web accessibility.

Is Certification a One-time or an Ongoing Process?

WebAIM can offer either, depending on the needs of your organization. If you are creating content that is unlikely to change over time, a one-time certification might be sufficient. In this case, we will usually provide you with a document stating that WebAIM certified the accessibility of your site on a specific date.
If your site is updated regularly, you may desire regular re-certification on the content of the site. The frequency and comprehensiveness of each re-certification will vary based on your needs. These follow up checks are usually less extensive than the original certification. When certification is ongoing, WebAIM will usually host a page showing the current level of accessibility of the site as well as the date of the next scheduled re-evaluation.

What Standard Do You Use When Certifying a Web Site?

The standard can vary depending on your needs. If your organization is either part of or does business with the US federal government, then you must verify that your site conforms with Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act. Many other countries or states in the U.S. have laws regarding accessibility. If you are more concerned with the overall accessibility, then you may consider site certification based on the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG). WebAIM can even help you devise your own accessibility standard and/or policy to which we can help you attain and certify compliance.

What if a Certified Site Starts to Have Accessibility Problems?

WebAIM site certifications are for a specific date and compliance level. It is up to you to ensure that your site maintains that level of accessibility over time. Of course, WebAIM can help you in these efforts by auditing and re-certifying your site upon request or at regular intervals.

0 Site Monitoring and Reporting

Site Monitoring and Reporting

If you would like to know where your site stands in regard to accessibility, we can provide reports to help you understand your accessibility issues and how to fix them.

Monitoring

If you have a dynamic, constantly changing site, our monitoring service can alert you to accessibility issues that may arise. And while we use the reporting mechanisms of the WAVEevaluation tool, our monitoring and reporting is done by a person - an accessibility expert. Automated accessibility reports can be helpful, but they can also be deceptive. Human evaluation is the only method by which true accessibility can be verified. Our staff is skilled in detecting accessibility issues for all disability categories using automated testing, user testing, and assistive technologies to evaluate your site. We provide thorough, easy-to-understand reports that identify the issues, explain what the issues are, and provide you with resources and knowledge to remedy the issue.

Reporting

Brief accessibility summary for $350

Not sure where to begin? Consider a brief accessibility review of your site. Starting at $350, an accessibility expert will review your site and provide you with:
  • A list of the high-profile accessibility and usability errors.
  • Recommendations for remediation.
  • Suggestions for next steps based on your specific site and needs.
This summary is usually three to five pages in length. It is a great starting point for larger sites and is also a valuable service for small-scale websites with very limited budgets.

In-depth report

If you have a larger site, or if you need to document conformance to a certain accessibility standard, then you will need an in-depth report of the accessibility of your site.
This report can be organized any number of ways, including the following:
  • By severity: Some violations are more serious than others.
  • By checkpoint or standard: Usually, our reports are based on Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act or by WCAG 1.0 (the international accessibility guidelines written by the Worldwide Web Consortium).
  • By web page.
  • Perhaps most valuable of all, we can also organize the report by suggested order of repair. This takes several factors into account, including prominence of the error, seriousness of the error and ease of repair.
The report will also include documentation of specific accessibility and usability errors, code samples, resources, and recommendations that can be used to fix accessibility issues. We won’t just tell you what’s wrong; we'll tell you how to fix it.

Accessible Design and Retrofitting

Whether you're looking at building a new, accessible site from the ground up or making an existing site more accessible, our team of accessibility experts, web developers, and programmers can ensure that your site meets accessibility guidelines. While we can build or retrofit the entire site for you, we prefer to provide assistance to your developers so that they both learn the principles of accessible design and can support and implement accessibility into the future. Our team has experience in building accessible sites that range from small informational sites to large e-commerce sites and have experience in a vast array of web and multimedia technologies.

Accessibility as Part of Site Design

If you have a choice, it is usually best to include accessibility as part of a site design or redesign. Accessibility features will integrate more smoothly with the site and changes will be easier to make. Site changes at the time of design are usually more cost effective as well. If you update your site regularly, accessible design should be part of your next site design. WebAIM can design your site with accessibility in mind or can help you throughout the design process to ensure that the design decisions you are making support full accessibility.

Retrofitting

Accessibility as part of design is usually more effective, but there are still several reasons why you may want to retrofit your your existing site. Here are just a few of them:
  • The site is newly designed or redesigned, so it is not feasible to wait for the next site redesign to implement accessibility features.
  • Your site has sections that are not updated as regularly as the new site or will not be modified as part of a site redesign.
  • Most accessibility problems are included in the content of the site (e.g. images and tables in the body of the page) and not the navigation.
  • Your site was designed by a third-party design group, so you are not staffed to repair accessibility errors, even with proper training.
We understand the unique issues involved in retrofitting web content for accessibility and can help you in ensuring accessibility of your redesigned web site.
